FAQ: 202 Scheduling

What advanced writing courses in rhetoric do you offer?

We offer the following resident instruction courses:

  • 202A, Effective Writing: Writing in the Social Sciences
  • 202B, Effective Writing: Writing in the Humanities
  • 202C, Effective Writing: Technical Writing
  • 202D, Effective Writing: Business Writing
  • 202H, Writing in the Humanities: Adult Literacy
What 202 do I need to take?

The 202 is determined by your major. You will need to check your major’s requirements or speak with your advisor to find out which of the advanced writing in rhetoric courses you will need.

What control is on the 202 courses?

Typically, all the 202 courses, with the exception of ENGL 202H, are controlled for scheduling only 04-11 (student’s must have earned 43.1 credits to be considered 4th-semester standing) and IP (Integrated Programs/ BAMA) students.

ENGL 202H has a prevent all control because the instructor oversees enrollment in the class. See the “What is ENGL 202H, Writing in the Humanities: Adult Literacy?” section below for more information.

There may be special sections of some of the 202 courses that are controlled for certain majors. Be sure to double check the controls if you are unable to get in to the course.

Why can’t I schedule the course when I am going to be 4th-semester standing in the semester I want to take it?

You will not be able to officially schedule the course until the system updates you to 4th-semester status. That means you will have to wait until all of your grades are in for your current classes and the system changes your semester standing.

Can my instructor give permission to override me into a class?

No, department policy states that we cannot override you in to a section unless you are a graduating senior—graduating in the current semester for which you are scheduling. You will need to follow the appropriate steps below based on your situation.

What if I am a graduating senior—graduating in the current semester for which I am scheduling—and I have been unable to get in to a section of 202 (A, B, C, or D)?

The Department’s policy will allow us to override you in to a section, but you must do the following:

  • Have an official letter from your Department Advisor on letterhead stating you are filing your intent to graduate and that you need the course to graduate.
  • File your intent to graduate
  • Submit the letter from your Advisor to Lynn Setzler in 130 Ritenour. The Department of English will not guarantee your enrollment in a specific section of ENGL 202 (A, B, C, or D). The section will be assigned based on your class schedule. We are unable to schedule the section based on your work schedule.
  • Continue to try to enroll in 202 until midway through the add/drop period the first week of the semester before we will override you into a section. We suggest putting a watch on as many sections of the course that you are able.
  • If you have followed all of the above steps and you are still unable to enroll in a section, midway through the add/drop period. Lynn Setzer will assign you to a section based on your current academic schedule and email you with the course assignment information.

Lynn Setzer will contact Online Education to get you enrolled in a section of the class and email you with the course assignment information.
What if I am not a graduating senior?

You need to put a watch on as many classes you are able and/or keep checking the schedule of courses for openings. As mentioned above, we will only override students who are graduating in this semester with the appropriate documentation listed above.

**Please keep in mind when checking the system it is not in “real time” and may show an opening that isn’t really there. If you meet the criteria for enrolling in the course and you are unable to do so, the seat is no longer available.

What if I am not a graduating senior, but I will be studying abroad my senior year and need to take the course now?
  • Have an official letter from your Department Advisor on letterhead stating that you will be studying abroad during your senior year and that you need to take the course this semester.
What if I need the course to satisfy a prerequisite?

We will not override you in to a course based on a prerequisite course requirement.
